NDP STANDS WITH WOMEN'S GROUPS
OTTAWA - Today, NDP Status of Women critic Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) joined the National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) during a press conference in Ottawa. NAWL was forced to close down its national office and lay off its staff following the Harper Conservatives' decision to changes its funding policy to women's groups.
"The work NAWL has done in coalition with other groups to dismantle barriers to achieve women's equality will be greatly missed by the many women's organizations that depend on them for their research, advocacy and expertise," said Mathyssen.
A year ago, Status of Women Canada's funding program was drastically altered, taking money away from groups that work to advance women's equality in Canada.
"The closure of NAWL will turn back the clock on women's equality in Canada," said Mathyssen. "The Harper government is not committed to promoting women's equality. They don't understand the issues that women face today. They are abandoning everyday women in this country."
